                 Water or H2O is a substance that is the most plentiful on the earth. It is accounted as 70 percent of the earth’s surface. Water is almost colorless, tasteless, and is an odorless liquid. Water is the only substance that can be changed in 3 states of matter. The state of matter of water is liquid, but it can be changed into other states; it can be solid as ice, and can be gaseous as water vapor when water is above its boiling point. Gas can also transform into liquid by the condensation. And water as a gas can also become solid by the process known as the frost formation and when solid state of water changes into gas, the process is called sublimation. Water has a surface tension which is the cohesion of water molecules at the surface of the water. The water’s surface tension is the reason why some insects can float on the water surface. When bubbles occur, it shows that the surface tension decreases. There are many properties of water that we can play with and there are many experiments associated with water that I found interesting.

            I tried to follow the experiment in this link, ‘http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOWg2cTfA9w’. Although, this experiment does not show the transformation between ice and water, it shows the interesting transformation on the surface of liquid. The materials you need are milk, food colorings, plate, cotton bud, and dish washing soap. Here I poured the milk into the plate and dropped the food coloring on it. I used two colors, red and yellow. After that I used the cotton bud which has the dish washing soap on it in order to make the color’s transformation. When I dripped the cotton bud, the food coloring went away from the cotton bud, because of the chemical in the soap. The effect of the colors is very amazing. If more food colorings are used, the effect of the colors will be even more interesting.

                   Another experiment I tried is to make a hot ice. I found the making of ‘hot ice’ in this link ‘http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aC-KOYQsIvU’. The formation of hot ice extremely amazed me. To make this, it requires sodium acetate, water, and pan. I decided to make sodium acetate myself, because the sodium acetate is not sold out and not available everywhere I found. To make sodium acetate, vinegar, baking soda, microwavable glass, and coffee filter are needed. Firstly, I mixed vinegar with baking soda, stirred them, and kept putting a little amount of vinegar until there is no foam. After that I boiled it until I heard the popping sound. Secondly, I needed to cool it down in the room temperature until it became a gel or form a crystal. And after it formed into a crystal or translucent gel, it needed to be filtered by the coffee filter in order to allow the filter to absorb the water out. Finally, we needed to break the pieces into powder.

             However, the mixture I made did not become crystal-like. It was still a liquid. After I re-did it three times, the results of sodium acetate were the same. Thus, the making of sodium acetate was unsuccessful. So, I just tried to use that solution to make hot ice by following the method. Nevertheless, the liquid did not transform into an ice. The experiment was not successful.

                    After I searched through the information and experiment, I realized that water is very common, yet very necessary in living; everything in this world really associated with water. It is so common to us that we sometimes forgot how much water can be played with or changed into. Water can be so many things beyond what I expected.
